What to Record Before Replacing Extruder Wear Parts

Make the condition traceable

A close-up photograph can show a damaged area, but it rarely identifies the complete replacement requirement. Link each photograph and measurement to a component reference and a position in the assembly. Keep the original drawing available so the supplier can distinguish the intended geometry from the current condition of a used part.

Record the location and date

Use a simple component list with the machine reference, section or element position and inspection date. Give photographs matching file names. If several similar components are removed, keep their identities separate. This avoids assigning one component’s measurements to another quotation line.

Keep measured and nominal dimensions separate

Record the measurement method and location together with the result. Identify whether a number comes from the controlled drawing or from an inspection of the used part. Do not assume a worn sample represents the manufacturing dimension. Acceptance limits should come from the relevant machine documentation or an agreed engineering specification, not a universal percentage found online.

Add operating observations

Note the material processed, filler type, recent process changes and the reason the inspection was initiated. Record observations such as visible surface damage or a change reported by the operating team without assigning an unconfirmed cause. A component photograph alone cannot establish whether wear, assembly, material choice or another issue caused a production problem.

Turn the records into an enquiry

Provide the controlled drawing, the component list, photographs and the quantity required. Explain whether you want a like-for-like replacement or a reviewed material alternative. Include the inspection documentation you need with the new supply. A clear record also helps your receiving team check that the delivered part matches the approved order.

What this checklist does not replace

Inspection, disassembly and maintenance should follow the equipment manufacturer’s procedures and your site’s safety arrangements. This checklist organises purchasing information; it does not set wear limits or diagnose equipment failures.
